A day with elephants: the most beautiful experience in Thailand!

El Suedeste Asiático no es sólo playas hermosas, arrozales, pagodas y tuk-tuks. Los paisajes naturales, su flora y su fauna, también son motivo de asombro y turismo internacional. Y en Chiang Mai, yo tuve la fortuna de sumergirme en una de las experiencias naturales más hermosas que haya vivido: ¡convivir con majestuosos elefantes en su hábitat! Siento el cuerpo calientito tan sólo de recordar este día. Y es que la imaginación no alcanza para realmente comprender y percibir lo mágica que puede ser esta experiencia. Los elefantes son criaturas nobles, gentiles, juguetonas, dulcísimas y merecen el mayor respeto y admiración que podamos darles.

Southeast Asia is not only gorgeous beaches, rice fields, pagodas and tuk-tuks. The natural landscapes, their flora and fauna, are also cause of amazement and international tourism. And in Chiang Mai I had the opportunity to submerge in one of the most beautiful natural experiences I will ever live: spending a day with elephants in their habitat. My body feels warm just with the memories! There isn’t enough imagination that will make you grasp, perceive, the magic of the moments spent with these creatures! Elephants are noble, gentle, playful, sweet animals that deserve our utmost respect and admiration.

Por esto mismo es tan importante para mí la entrada de hoy. Porque no sólo vengo a platicarles todos los detalles de mi aventura, sino porque quiero compartir con ustedes la importancia de vivir este sueño con consciencia, siempre cuidando de no apoyar a lugares que maltraten, abusen y estresen a los elefantes.

This is why today’s post is so important to me. This post is not only about telling you all the details of my adventure, but about sharing with you the importance of living this dream with care; consciously choosing a company, guide or sanctuary that takes care of the elephants and does not promote violence, abuse or mistreat them.

Yo no quería irme de Tailandia sin este encuentro tan especial, así que dediqué muchas horas a investigar cuál empresa era la que mejor llenaba mis expectativas.

I didn’t want to leave Thailand without this special encounter. So I dedicated many hours to research which sanctuary fulfilled all my expectations and requirements.

Finalmente di con Patara Elephant Farm, un santuario que busca rescatar elefantes del maltrato de circos y compañías que los usan para shows, para cuidar de ellos y reinsertarlos en su hábitat natural. Y de todo corazón les platico que quedé profundamente conmovida y satisfecha con la experiencia que me otorgaron. Así que sin más, ahora sí entraré en los detalles.

I finally found Patara Elephant Farm, a sanctuary that rescues elephants from circuses and companies that use them as show attractions, to take care of them and readapt them into their natural habitat. And from the bottom of my heart I say that I am truly touched and grateful with the experience that they offer. So without further ado, I will now share all the beautiful details.

Nos recogieron en nuestro hotel en Chiang Mai a eso de las 7:30 am. Ya desayunados y vestidos con ropa cómoda, nos subimos a la camioneta en la que recogeríamos a un grupo más (en total seríamos 10) y emprenderíamos nuestro camino al corazón de la selva, donde se ubica el santuario.

The people from Patara Elephant Farm picked us up at our hotel in Chiang Mai at 7:30 am. Together we would pick up the rest of the group that would share the experience with us (10) and drive to the heart of the jungle, where the sanctuary is located.

Hicimos más de una hora de camino ya que, a diferencia de otros lugares que fingen ofrecer el mismo servicio, Patara realmente se encuentra al interior de la selva para que los elefantes permanezcan en su hábitat natural. Menciono esto porque durante el trayecto alcanzas a ver más de una empresa con los elefantes atados a postes o en corrales a la orilla de la carretera, con grandes cajas a sus espaldas listos para cargar a turistas mal informados. Te apachurra el corazón.

It took us more than one hour to get there. Different from other “sanctuaries” that pretend to offer the same service, Patara really is in the depths of the jungle so that the elephant remain in their territory. It was super sad to see along the way companies announcing “amazing elephant experiences” while having the animals tied up in posts meters from the highway, and with huge wooden baskets straining their backs ready to carry uninformed tourists.

Así pues seguimos hasta que en medio de árboles, tierra y una pequeña cascada llegamos al punto donde iniciaríamos nuestro encuentro. Tres elefantes: un pequeño bebé, una madre y una abuela comían caña de azúcar y plátano, y agitaban sus colas para espantar algunas moscas. ¡Ya esa vista resultaba tan especial! Aún esperábamos instrucciones, así que los minutos que estuvimos ahí sin realmente entender qué seguía, nos acercamos un poco temerosos a la familia que gozaba de su colación. Más tarde aprenderíamos que los cuidadores nos estaban observando, y conforme analizaban nuestra interacción, nuestra valentía o acercamiento con los elefantes, nos asignarían a la criatura a la que habríamos de acompañar durante todo el día.

However we carried on between trees and dirt until we reached our destination. With the sound of a waterfall in the background, we came out of the car to a stunning view: three elephats: a baby, a mother and a grandmother ate sugar cane and bananas while happily waving their tails. We enjoyed the sight while we waited for further instructions. We were able to walk closer to the animals, procure them some forgotten food and just smile while trying to get their attention. We would later learn that we were being observed by the guides during these moments so as to analyze our interaction, fear or sense of security and trust and be therefore paired with the most suitable of the elephants.

Cabe entonces mencionar que en Patara ofrece diferentes programas. Mi familia y yo elegimos el de “Elefante por un día”, en el que emparejan a un elefante por persona para así conseguir una experiencia mucho más personal y cercana. Esta modalidad es un poco más costosa, ¡pero vale toda la pena!

Patara offers different programs. Mi family and me chose the Elephant CareTaker for One Day, in which each person is paired up with a different elephant during the whole experience. This way you get to live a much up close and personal experience. Trust me, it’s worth the extra dollars.

Una vez que terminó este primer encuentro, bajamos a la orilla del río donde nos entregarían una blusa tejida típica de la zona y nos presentarían a nuestros elefantes por el día. A mí me tocó convivir con Buat Hor, luego del pequeño bebé, el más juguetón del grupo. ¡Y yo sentí pura felicidad! A cada quien nos entregaron una canasta llena de bananas con las que alimentaríamos a nuestro elefante, a la vez que forjábamos un lazo de confianza entre ambos. Aprendimos que para realmente afianzar la familiaridad es importante darle el alimento en la boca, y no sólo permitir que lo tomaran con su trompa. Cuando alimentas al elefante en la boca, éste alcanza a olerte, a reconocerte.

After this brief encounter, we trekked down to the river where we would put on a traditional knitted top and we would be introduced to our elephant for the day. I was paired with the lovely Buat Hor; after the baby, the most playful of the bunch! And I was all happiness! We also got a basket full of bananas that we were instructed to feed to the animal directly in the mouth. This way, we would begin to forge a relationship of trust between us. We learned that by feeding them directly in the mouth, and not only letting them take the food out of the basket with their trunk, they were able to smell you and begin to recognize you.

Cuando se hubieron consumido todos los plátanos, pasamos a una pequeña palapa a escuchar más datos y explicaciones sobre estas hermosas criaturas. Ahí aprendimos sobre cómo duermen, cómo y con qué se alimentan, sobre su sistema digestivo (¡hasta olimos sus heces, que sorprendentemente son inodoras cuando están sanos!) y su manera de expresar enfermedad y felicidad.

When all the bananas where gobbled up, we were taken to a small hut where we would receive further information and explanations on the elephant. We learned how they sleep, what they eat, how their digestive system works (we even smelled their odorless poop!) and how they express sickness and joy.

Luego de la explicación, ¡llegó la hora del baño! Luego de que los guías nos explicaran cómo, con palmas, sacudirles las espaldas con fuerza a los elefantes caminé con Buat Hor al río. ¡Qué momento más especial! ¡Los dos en el agua, él queriendo jugar y chapotear y yo intentando lavarle la piel rugosa y peluda! En definitiva una misión no apta para principiantes, y aunque Buat Hor probablemente necesitaría una mejor pasada más tarde, sin duda nos divertimos.

After the chat it was time for a bath! The guides explained to us how with palm leaves we needed to really scrape the dirt off of the elephants’ backs. I got into the cold water with Buat Hor. What an exciting moment! Both of us in the water: he wanting to splash and play and me trying to wash his rugged, hairy skin. Definitely a task not suited for beginners. And even when Buat Hor would most likely need another bath later on that day, we for sure had loads of fun!

Al mediodía nos tocó comer a nosotros. Volvimos al punto de encuentro y bajo un techo de palma encontramos una mesa repleta de bocadillos típicos: mangos frescos, naranjas, dulces de coco, pollo frito, donas horneadas con azúcar, ¡una delicia! Y con los corazones a reventar de alegría y la ligera lluvia que nos amenizaba el día, un perfecto descanso antes de continuar.

It was then time for our lunch. We walked back to the meeting point and found under a small roof a beautiful meal spread on the table: fresh mangos and passion fruit, oranges, coconut candy, fried chicken, baked donuts with sugar… so yummy! We ate and chatted, listening to the light rain falling, with hearts bursting with glee. Just the perfect break before we carried on with the activities.

¡Y ahora mi parte favorita! ¡Nadar con Buat Hor! Sí, nadar. No sólo meterte al agua e intentar tallarle la espalda sin éxito, ja. Sino realmente dejar ir el cuerpo y jugar con él dentro del agua, abrazarlo, amarrarte a su espalda y permitir que haga bucitos y se revuelque. Podrá sonar un poco peligroso, y quizá sí lo es, pero yo en ningún momento sentí temor, ni violencia. Al revés, fue mi momento favorito del día: ver cómo los elefantes conviven entre ellos, juegan, echan chorros de agua por sus trompas, dan vueltas en el agua, ¡disfrutan la vida!

And now for my favorite part! Swimming with dear Buat Hor! Yes, swimming! Not only jumping into the water and trying to scrub his back without success. But really letting loose and playing with him inside the water, give him a hug, ride on his back and take plunges with him. It might sound a bit dangerous, and maybe it is, but I never felt fear or violence at any moment. On the contrary, it was my favorite time of the day. Just being able to witness how elephants coexist and mingle and play and squirt fountains of water from their trunks, and toss and turn in the water and truly enjoy life!

No recuerdo cuánto tiempo estuvimos ahí adentro, pero felizmente pude haberme quedado un buen rato más. ¡Sentía tanta alegría! Sin embargo, llegó la hora de salir del agua fresca, ponernos nuevamente nuestro traje de la región y emprender nuestro regreso a la camioneta que nos llevaría al hotel. Pero este último trecho sería también especial.

I don’t recall for how long I was in there, but I could’ve easily stayed for a longer time. I felt so happy! Nevertheless, it was time to get out of the fresh water and put our clothes back on to begin our journey back to the van that would take us to the hotel. However, this last bit would also be special.

Sobre el lomo de Buat Hor y a través de la selva llegaríamos a la cima de la colina, donde sería el momento de despedirnos y partir. Luego de mucho debate, decidí subirme en Buat Hor. No quería hacer nada que lo lastimara. Sin embargo, cuando investigué que si te subes a pelo (sin una de esas canastas rudas y pesadas), directamente sobre su lomo, no los hieres, sentí tranquilidad y confié en los guías. El elefante entonces sacó su trompa y me levantó, permitiéndome instalarme entre su cuello y lo que serían sus hombros.

On Buat Hor’s back and through the jungle I would reach the top of the hill, where we should part. After a lot of debate I decided to hop on Buat Hor. I certainly did not want to do anything that would hurt him. But my research told me that if you mount them bare, without a roudy basket, you do not injure them. I trusted our guides. The elephant then pulled out his trunk and allowed me to step on it. He raised me to his neck and I slid into place, between his neck and shoulders.

El paseo duró unos 20 minutos. Me tomó un par de minutos superar el miedo a perder el balance y caerme, pero una vez segura, me divertí al acompañar a Buat Hor a rascar su trompa entre ramas y arrancar hojas para comerse un tentempié. Detrás nuestro venían la madre y el bebé que nos recibieron al inicio, jugando y me atrevo a decir que hasta educando al pequeño. En una ocasión nos detuvimos porque el chiquito pidió leche y la mamá prosiguió a amamantar. ¡Qué experiencia!

The ride lasted 20 approximately 20 minutes. It took me a few seconds to overcome the fear of losing balance and falling, but once I felt safe I rejoiced letting Buat Hor lead me into trees that would scratch his itches and branches that seemed tasty to him. Behind us followed the mother elephant and her babe that we saw at the beginning. For a moment we even had to stop because the little one asked for milk and the mother granted it: what a gift!

Una vez en la cima, era momento de despedirse. Y realmente con melancolía le acaricié la trompa a Buat Hor una vez más y le dije adiós.

Once at the top, it was time to say goodbye. And full of melancholy I stroked Buat Hor’s back and trunk for one last time.

Así terminó una de las vivencias más hermosas y memorables que seguramente tendré en toda mi vida. Pasar con estas criaturas un día entero te deja mucho más que una foto bonita o un recuerdo feliz; te deja el aprendizaje de que son nobles, fuertes, juguetonas y gentiles; de que la naturaleza es sabia y ha traído al mundo especímenes admirables de quienes tenemos muchísimo que aprender.

This was the end to one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences that I will probably ever have. Spending a full day with these creatures gives so much more than a pretty photo or a happy memory; it leaves you with the knowledge that elephants are noble, strong, gentle; that nature is wise and has brought to this world admirable species that we need to respect and look up to.

Finalmente quiero decir que recomiendo ampliamente a Patara Elephant Farm. Su trato a los elefantes y hacia nosotros fue de primera calidad y realmente tienen un conocimiento sobre cómo cuidar de estos bellos mamíferos.

I want to conclude by recommending Patara Elephant Farm to all of you. Their treatment towards elephants and towards us was first quality and they really have a profound understanding of how to take care of these beautiful mammals.

Angkor Wat: breathtaking sites and beautiful people

Durante los últimos cinco meses he tenido la increíble oportunidad de explorar el sudeste asiático, y entre todos los países y ciudades que he visitado, debo confesar que Camboya se ganó mi corazón.

During the last five months I’ve had the incredible opportunity to explore South East Asia, and amongst all the countries and cities I have visited, I must confess that Cambodia won my heart.

Antes de aterrizar en Siem Reap, ya había completado investigaciones detalladas sobre Angkor Wat y sus espectaculares templos, y admito que tenía un miedo similar al que sentí previo a mi visita a Machu Picchu: ¿qué tal si no cumplía mis súper infladas expectativas? Con tantas fotos y videos que consumimos a diario en redes sociales, a veces es un peligro dejarse llevar.

Before I landed in Siem Reap, I had completed thorough research about Angkor Wat and its spectacular temples. And I admit that I felt a fear similar to the one I experienced before my visit to Machu Picchu: what if this Unesco Site did not fulfill my expectations? With all the photos and videos that we are exposed to everyday, sometimes it’s dangerous to let go.

Pero nada más equivocado que mis miedos infundados. ¡Camboya me enamoró! Y no sólo por los magníficos templos y sus paisajes campesinos, sino también por su gente tan agradecida y gentil. ¡Ah! ¡Escribir todo esto me despierta unas intensas ganas de volver! ¡Y de que ustedes visiten!

But nothing more wrong than my fears! Cambodia struck me in love! And not only for its magnificent temples and countryside landscapes, but for its gentle and grateful people. Oh! To write this just makes me want to go back! And for you to visit!

Así que hoy les tengo preparada una entrada con todos los detalles de mi visita y una lista de recomendaciones de mis templos favoritos, el hotel en el que me hospedé y la mejor manera de moverse en esta histórica ciudad.

So today I have prepared for you a post with all the details of my visit to Cambodia, along with a list of recommendations about my favorite temples, the hotel I stayed at and the best way to move around this historic town.

Pero antes, unos datos básicos: el acceso a los templos de Angkor Wat y aledaños se consigue mediante la compra del Angkor Pass. El pase sólo se compra en una tiquetería general a la que cualquier tuk-tuk te puede llevar. Puedes elegir el pase por un día, tres días o siete días. El más conveniente para mi estancia era el de tres días, y tuvo un costo de 62 dólares.

But before, a few basic things: access to Angkor Wat and its surrounding temples is granted only with the purchase of the Angkor Pass. You can buy this ticket at the Angkor Conservation Area ticket booth, which any tuk-tuk driver can take you to. You can choose between the one day, three day or seven day ticket. The most convenient for my stay was the three day ticket, and had a cost of 62 dollars.

Otro tip súper importante que les doy: ¡muévanse en tuk-tuk! Mejor aún: apalábrense con un chofer de tuk-tuk que los lleve y traiga a su gusto durante toda su estancia en Camboya. Es realmente económico, sencillo y agrega un plus cultural y de aventura a su visita.

Another super important tip that I want to give to you is: move around in a tuk-tuk! Better yet: talk it out with a tuk-tuk driver, and have him take you everywhere at anytime during your stay in Cambodia. This is definitely the cheapest, simplest and most fun way to move around town; plus, it adds a cultural adventure to your visit!

Ahora sí, con ustedes, la lista de mis lugares favoritos y highlights en Angkor.

Now, without further ado, the list of my favorite places and highlights in Angkor.

1. Angkor Wat – El favorito de todos (¡incluyéndome) y el más impresionante. Miles de personas viajan cada año a Camboya sólo para ver esta joya de la historia y de la arquitectura mundial. ¡Hasta aparece en la bandera nacional! Con más de 40 hectáreas, Angkor Wat es el monumento religioso más grande del mundo: ¡y es una belleza! Con todas las características del diseño Khmer, Angkor Wat comenzó a construirse en el siglo 12, con el objetivo de ser un templo para el dios hindú Vishnu. Sin embargo, luego de la muerte del rey y saqueos consecuentes, su construcción tomó otro destino: un centro budista.

Everyone’s favorite (including mine) and the most impressive one! Thousands of people travel each year to Cambodia just to witness this jewel of history and architecture. The main temple even appears on the national flag! With over 40 acres, Angkor Wat is the biggest religious monument in the world: and a beauty at that! With all the characteristics of classical Khmer style, Angkor Wat’s construction began in the 12th Century. It was supposed to become a temple dedicated to the hindu god Vishnu. However, after the king’s death and consequential loots, its erection took another turn: a buddhist temple.

Hoy en día sigue siendo un centro budista, y puedes encontrar a los niños monjes repartiendo oraciones a locales y turistas. Sin embargo, también encuentras vestigios de su inicio hindú, con gigantescas esculturas de Vishnu en algunos pasillos.

Today, Angkor Wat remains a buddhist center of worship, and you can find children monks giving out prayers to locals and tourists alike. Nevertheless, you can also find vestiges of its hindu beginnings, with gigantic sculptures of Vishnu in some of the niches and hallways.

El complejo se construyó mayoritariamente con piedra caliza, lo que permitió la creación de minuciosas inscripciones y grabados en todas las paredes. Elefantes, mujeres curvilíneas, guerras… ¡prepárate para suspirar ante tanta hermosura!

The complex was primarily built with sandstone, which allowed for detailed carvings and inscriptions in all of the walls. Elephants, curvy women, demi-goddesses, wars… prepare to sigh amongst all this beauty!

Recorrer todos los edificios y recovecos de este increíblemente conservado templo te tomará toda la mañana, ¡pero a eso vienes, así que disfrútalo y trata de atesorar todo lo que ves! Sinceramente, nunca verás nada igual; es uno de los sitios arqueológicos más impresionantes y bellos que he conocido.

To stroll and explore all the buildings and nooks of this incredibly preserved temple will take you all morning. But this is what you are here for! So enjoy it and try to cherish and remember everything you observe. Honestly, you will never see anything like it; Angkor Wat is one of the most astonishing and wondrous sites I have ever seen.

2. Templo Bayón – Otro de los templos que realmente les sugiero que conozcan se encuentra ubicado a tan sólo unos minutos en tuk-tuk de Angkor Wat. Me refiero al Templo Bayón, que con sus colosales cabezas talladas en sus pilares ofrece un paisaje totalmente diferente a lo que has observado.

Bayon Temple – Another temple that I really suggest you visit is located just a few minutes away on tuk-tuk from Angkor Wat. I’m talking about Bayon Temple, that with colossal heads carved in its pillars, offers a completely different landscape than your previous khmer encounter.

Con cada templo que visitas en Camboya vives una increíble sensación de maravilla y descubrimiento. No importa cuántos otros turistas estén visitando el mismo templo que tú, las construcciones son tan impresionantes que realmente te sientes como un explorador descubriendo un mundo mágico.

With every temple you visit in Cambodia you live an amazing sensation of awe and discovery. It doesn’t matter how many other tourists are roaming the same site as you, the constructions are so breathtaking that you truly feel like a pioneer, an explorer of a magical world.

Se desconoce cuántas cabezas labradas habría alguna vez en el Templo Bayón, pero se estima que alrededor de unas 200, ¡a mí este sitio me dejó sin palabras!

There is no definite record of how many stone carved heads once covered Bayon Temple, but researchers estimate approximately 200. I lost all my words.

3. Pub Street – Luego un día de mucha caminata, calor y excesiva humedad, llega el momento de la cerveza y el relax, y en Siem Reap no hay mejor zona para tomarse unas bien frías que en Pub Street. Tal como su nombre lo dice, Pub Street es una calle repleta de barecitos y restaurantes (¡y motos y tuk-tuks y vendedores callejeros!) donde encontrarás una amplia variedad de opciones gastronómicas locales e internacionales.

Pub Street – After a day of lots of walking, heat, and excessive humidity, comes the time for beer and relax. And in Siem Reap there is no better place to get your fix than Pub Street. Just as the name suggests it, Pub Street is a road brimming with bars and restaurants (and motorcycles and tuk-tuks and street vendors!) where you will find a wide variety of culinary options, both local and international.

A eso de las 5:00 pm, ya que los complejos arqueológicos cierran sus puertas y tu cuerpo te pide un respiro, sal a recorrer esta calle y la zona centro del pueblo (sólo ten cuidado con las motos que no se detienen aún cuando te ven pasar). Prueba una Angkor helada y, si tienes el valor, botanea alacranes o serpientes fritas en algún puestito ambulante. Así cerré yo mi primer día en Camboya.

At around 5 pm, once the archeological sites close their doors and your body begs for a break, stroll this way (just beware of crazy motorcycle riders!) Try a cold Angkor and, if you’re brave enough, snack on scorpions and fried snakes in any of the street stalls.

3. Banteay Srei – En tu segundo día en Angkor, comienza tu itinerario cultural tempranito en la mañana. El templo de Banteay Srei es tu siguiente parada. Conocido también como Citadela de las Mujeres, este templo destaca por sus coloraciones rojas y la exquisitez de sus grabados. Construido en siglo 10, el templo servía para venerar al dios hindú Shiva.

Banteay Srei – On your second day around Angkor, start your cultural itinerary early in the morning. Banteay Srei is your next stop. Also known as the Women’s Citadel, this temple stands out for its red coloration and the richness of its carvings. Built in the 10th Century, the temple venerated the hindu god Shiva.

En tuk-tuk y desde el centro de la zona Angkor, te toma aproximadamente una hora llegar a este sitio (también está incluido en tu Angkor Pass), pero realmente vale la pena. Tan sólo el camino te ofrece vistas a la vida cotidiana de los locales, a estanques colmados de flores de loto, a tiendas de productos de mimbre y madera, a casas típicas construidas sobra zancos para mantenerse secos durante las constantes inundaciones, a niños chamagosos yendo a la escuela en bicicletas…

The trip to this particularly contrasting sight will take you approximately a one hour tuk-tuk ride; the entrance is also included in your Angkor Pass. And let me tell you: it’s worth it. Just the way there offers stunning vistas to the Cambodian people’s life: ponds full of lotus flowers, shops selling wicker and wooden baskets, typical houses built on stilts to avoid flooding, happy kids riding their bikes to school…

Y claro, el templo es magnífico: aunque pequeño, la minucia y calidad de sus grabados, y su especial color rojizo, lo convierten en una joya que no debes dejar de visitar.

And of course the temple is magnificent: though it is quite small, the exquisiteness of the carvings and its special reddish hue, turn it into a must visit place.

4. Ta Prohm – A tu regreso de Banteay Srei debes hacer otra parada indispensable: el templo de Ta Prohm. También conocido como el templo de Tomb Raider luego de que aquí se filmaran escenas de esta famosa película, esta zona arqueológica es realmente única.

On your way back from Banteay Srei you must make another imperative stop in Ta Prohm temple. Also known as the Tomb Raider temple, after scenes of this famous saga where filmed here, this archeological site is really unique.

Mucha gente llega a este lugar con ganas de recrear en su imaginación las escenas de este taquillero film, pero para mí, este santuario retumba con una vibra especial. Casi sin restauración humana, los ancestrales árboles y sus raíces, como garras, han tomado posesión de cada ala, pasillo y fachada del área. Sientes en la piel el rastro de un pueblo culto y educado que alguna vez habitó estas junglas.

Flocks of people come here to recreate in their imagination all the scenes of this blockbuster, but to me this sanctuary rumbles with a special vibe. Almost without human restoration, the ancestral trees and their roots, like claws, have claimed and possessed every wing, hall and facade of the area. Your skin feels the trail of an educated people that once inhabited this jungle.

5. Masaje de pies – Termina tu segundo día (o todos tus días o mañanas o tardes) en Camboya con un bien merecido masaje de pies. ¡De verdad que no saben la delicia! Abundan los spas y las ofertas en las calles del centro turístico de Siem Reap y les aseguro que en cualquiera que se metan los van a saber chiquear. Los precios son ridículamente baratos, ¡y más ridículo sería que no los aprovecharan! Por tan poco como 6 dólares, ¡consiente a tus pies con una hora de riquísimo masaje! Honestamente, yo fui a Temple Massage como tres veces y pedí los de dos horas, ¡no saben el placer! ¡Y más después de caminar tanto!

Foot massage – Finish off your second day (or just do this every day, morning, afternoon and evening) in Cambodia with a well deserved foot massage. You really cannot understand the pleasure until you listen to me and do it! Along Pub Street and the neighboring roads you will find a myriad of spas and massage parlors, and I can assure you that in all them you will be sweetly pampered. The prices for a foot massage are ridiculously cheap! And more ridiculous would be if you did not take advantage of the situation! For as little as 6 dollars, treat your feet to one hour of heavenly rub. Honestly, I went like three times to Temple Massage and payed for the two hour massage. Oh the deliciousness! Specially after all the walking and temple hopping you do!

También probé con mi papá la limpieza de pies por medio de peces… Sin comentarios, jaja. / I also tried some feet clean up by fish with my dad… no comments!

6. Markets, markets, markets – Después de los templos, la comida, la cervecita y el masajito ¡es hora del shopping! Y en Camboya enloquecerás con la cantidad de mercados nocturnos y todo lo que puedes comprar: bolsas de mimbre, túnicas estampadas, collares de metal, playeras de algodón… ¡No olvides regatear y diviértete! Estoy segura de que encontrarás más de algún tesoro y mil buenas gangas.

After temple hopping, trying local foods, drinking cold beers, and relishing with a massage comes the time for shopping! And in Cambodia you’ll go crazy with the amount of night markets and their full array of options: wicker bags, printed tunics, metal jewelry, cotton t-shirts… Don’t forget to haggle and have fun! I’m sure that you will find more than a couple treasures and a myriad of good deals!

7. Golden Temple Residences Hotel – Por último quiero dejarles la recomendación del hotel en donde me hospedé. La ubicación es insuperable, la alberca es lindísima, el desayuno buenísimo, la happy hour muy atinada, y la relación calidad-precio superó todas nuestras expectativas. Pero lo que para mí se lleva todos los aplausos y agradecimientos es su gente y el servicio y la atención que otorgan a cada huésped. Cada encuentro con mucamas, recepcionistas, meseros, es un intercambio de gratitud y sonrisas, muestran un sincero aprecio por haber elegido visitar su país y su hotel. ¡Te alegran el día! ¡Te contagian de cariño!

Last but not least, I want to leave you with a great hotel recommendation. I stayed at Golden Temple Residences Hotel and I must say that the location was unbeatable; the pool was super pretty; breakfast was delicious; happy hour was on point, and the quality to price ratio surpassed all my expectations. But what really made this hotel special and deserves all my applauses and gratitude, is the people and the service and attention they give to each guest. Each encounter with a maid, a receptionist, a waiter is an exchange of thank you’s and smiles; they truly express their gratitude and affection to you for choosing their hotel and their country as a holiday destination. They just make your day. They spread their warmth and joy!

Este fue mi fin de semana en Camboya. Tres días llenos de historia, belleza, y exploración acompañada de mis padres. ¿Qué más podría pedir? Camboya es uno de esos lugares que te marcan de por vida, que no se olvidan, ¡que tienen tanto que ofrecer! Si no está en su lista de próximos viajes, insisto en que le den prioridad.

So this was my weekend in Cambodia. Three days filled with history, beauty and exploring with the company of my loving parents. What more could I ask for? Only for my sister! Cambodia is one of those places that leave an eternal mark in your life, that you never forget; that has so much to offer! If it’s not in your list of travels, I insist you give it priority.

Weekend in Hong Kong: 8 things you cannot miss!

Pasar un fin de semana increíble en Hong Kong suele ser bastante sencillo. En una ciudad donde abundan la buena comida, las actividades culturales, las compras, las vistas espectaculares y la eficiencia en el transporte público, un getaway exitoso es garantía.

Spending an amazing weekend in Hong Kong is so easy! In a city where good food, cultural activities, shopping, efficient transportation and spectacular views abound, a successful weekend getaway is a guarantee!

Así que si tienes planeado visitar Hong Kong, o si tienes la ventaja de vivir en un país cercano -como yo que vivo en Singapur-, o si simplemente eres de los que siempre está buscando un nuevo destino viajero, no te puedes perder esta lista de actividades y experiencias imperdibles en esta metrópoli.

So if you are planning a visit to Hong Kong, or you simply have the fortunate advantage of living in a country close to this city (like me in Singapore!), or if you just simply are the type of person always on the lookout for a new destinations, you can’t miss this list of unforgettable activities and experiences in the metropolis.

1. Sube en tram a Victoria’s Peak – Con una elevación de 552 metros, la vista desde Victoria’s Peak, un mirador en la montaña más alta en Hong Kong, te impactará. Y es que esta ciudad tiene más de 7,800 edificios, ¡de los cuales más de 1,300 son rascacielos con más de 100 metros de altura y 316 se alzan sobre los 150 metros! No por nada esta cima es uno de los sitios más icónicos de la localidad.

Head to Victoria’s Peak on the tram – With an elevation of 552 meters (1,811 ft), the view from Victoria’s Peak, a lookout perched on Hong Kong’s highest mountain, will take your breath away. Just picture this: Honk Kong gives home to more than 7,800 buildings, from which more than 1,300 are skyscrapers of at least 100 meters (328 ft) high, and 316 soar over 150 meters (492 ft)! It’s not just a coincidence that this peak has become one of the most iconic places of the island.

Existen diferentes maneras de llegar, pero subir mediante el tranvía merece la pena. Para empezar, te ahorras la empinada caminata (no todos los días se está de humor para hacer ejercicio y sudar, ¡ups!) y, además, vas disfrutando de la hermosa vista en uno de los viejos sistemas de transporte de la urbe.

There’s more than one way up to the peak, but I definitely recommend taking the tram. First of all, you save yourself from a hot and strenuous walk up (because let’f face it: you are not always in the mood to work out and sweat) and, also, you get to enjoy the beautiful vistas from one of the city’s oldest transportation systems.

Una vez arriba, intenta distinguir las construcciones más famosas de la ciudad, como el International Commerce Center (ICC), que con 484 metros de alto, se pavonea como el noveno edificio más alto del mundo.

Once you reach the top, take in the epic view, and try to distinguish the most famous skyscrapers and constructions in town; like the International Commerce Center (ICC), that with 484 meters (1,588 ft) high, boasts the title as the world’s 9th tallest building!

2. Come como los locales en Central – Luego de darle gusto a los ojos en Victoria’s Peak, es momento de hacer lo propio con el estómago. Así que aprovecha que estás por la zona y hazlo como los locales. El Distrito Central de la ciudad está ubicado en Hong Kong Island y concentra las oficinas de gobierno y la zona financiera de la ciudad, así como el barrio de Soho y sus restaurantes, bares, tiendas y sistema de escaleras eléctricas.

Eat like a local in Central District – After giving your eyes a treat at Victoria’s Peak, it’s time to do the same for your belly. So take advantage of your location and do it like the locals in Central District. Central District is located in Hong Kong Island and comprehends the city’s government offices, the financial sector and SoHo neighborhood with its array of cool bars, stores, and even an electric stair system.

Explora la zona sin miedo y descubre por qué a Hong Kong se le conoce como el Nueva York asiático. Para probar delicias locales a un precio barato, entra a Tsim Chai Kee Noodle Shop. Adentro del apretado local podrás escoger entre tres versiones de la tradicional sopa de fideos de arroz con wontones: con carne, con mariscos o con pescado. Te sugiero elijas la de carne y la sazones con algunas gotitas del picante que encontrarás en la mesa.

Explore the area without fear and discover why Hong Kong is also known as the asian New York. To try local delicacies and remain below budget, head to Tsim Chai Kee Noodle Shop. Inside the tight diner you will be able to choose amongst three versions of the traditional rice noodle and wonton soup: with meat, with seafood, with fish. I went for the meat and spiced things up with some drops of the chilli sauce I found on the table.

La comida llegará hirviendo en tan sólo cinco minutos. Este lugar es tan local, desenfadado y barato, que tendrás que hablarte a señas con las meseras y, si quieres usar servilletas, tendrás que pagar 3 dólares locales por ellas. ¡No te arrepentirás!

In under five minutes you will have a plate of boiling broth between your hands. This place is so local, casual and unpretentious that you will have to make yourself be understood by the servers through hand signals and buy a pack of napkins for $3 HKD if you wish to wipe your face.

3. Disfruta del skyline desde el Star Ferry – La ciudad de Hong Kong no se acota a la isla que le da el nombre. La península de Kowloon, ubicada justo enfrente de Hong Kong Island también da vida y energía a esta metrópoli. Y aunque es fácil y rápido llegar en metro de un lado del mar al otro, es obligación para cualquier viajero tomar el Star Ferry por lo menos una vez, pues desde el barco tendrás acceso a una privilegiada vista del skyline vertical de la ciudad. Te recomiendo que lo tomes por la noche, pues las fachadas de los edificios se iluminan con patrones y figuras de colores. Una vez en Kowloon recorre sus calles bulliciosas, admira los aparadores de las lujosas tiendas y métete a un bar a tomar un trago y ver la gente pasar.

Enjoy the skyline on the Star Ferry – Hong Kong city is not limited to the island that shares its name. The Kowloon peninsula, located just in front of the island also gives energy and life to this bustling metropolis. And even though its surprisingly easy to get from one side to the other on the metro, hopping aboard the Star Ferry at least once is an obligation for anyone. From the ferry you have access to privileged views of the city’s vertical skyline. I suggest you catch the sunset in it, for you will observe how the facades light up with colorful figures and patters. Once you get to Kowloon, stroll the busy streets, do some window shopping outside luxury shops and have a drink at a bar and people watch.

4. Visita el Big Buddha en Lantau Island – Inicia tu segundo día del fin de semana visitando el monumental Buddha de la isla Lantau. Toma el metro hasta la estación Tung Chung y de ahí toma el teleférico 360 Ngong Ping hasta la isla. El recorrido de 5.7 kilómetros en funicular tarda aproximadamente 25 minutos y las vistas al bosque, al mar y al aeropuerto lo valen.

Visit the Big Buddha in Lantau Island – Begin your second day of the weekend visiting the monumental Buddha at Lantau Island. Take the metro to Tung Chung station and from there hop on the 360 Ngong Ping cable car to the island. The 5.7 kilometer (3.5 mi) journey takes approximately 25 minutes, and the views of the forest, the ocean and the airport are well worth the price.

Una vez en el pueblo de Ngong Ping, camina hacia donde inicia la escalinata para subir al Tian Tin Buddha. Con más de 200 toneladas de peso, la escultura de bronce es colosal, ¡bellísima! Detente a mirar todos sus detalles y a absorber las vibras de alegría y seguridad que expide.

Once you get to the town of Ngong Ping, walk towards the stairs that lead to the Tian Tian Buddha. With more than 200 tons of weight, the bronze sculpture is colossal, ¡gorgeous! Stop and admire all its details; absorb the joyful vibes and confort that he exudes.

Al bajar, también visita el Monasterio Po Lin, uno de los santuarios budistas más importantes de Hong Kong.

On your way back take a few minutes to visit Po Lin’s Monastery: one of the most important buddhist sanctuaries in Hong Kong.

5. Brinda con unos drinks en Ozone, el bar del Ritz Carlton – Luego de un día de mucha caminata (y les advierto: humedad y calor), te mereces unos drinks en unos de los bares más cool de la ciudad. Ozone Bar, ubicado en el suntuoso hotel Ritz Carlton, ofrece quizá la vista más magnífica de la estridente metrópoli. Desde el piso 118 del rascacielos más altos de Hong Kong, tomarse un chardonnay o un whisky en las rocas tiene, literalmente, una categoría de altura.

Celebrate with drinks at Ozone, at the Ritz Carlton – After a day full of sun and long walks (and I warn you: also humidity and heat), you deserve a drink in one of Hong Kong’s coolest bars! Ozone Bar, crowning the lavish Ritz Carlton, offers the most magnificent view of the loud metropolis. Sipping a chardonnay or a scotch on the rocks on the 118th floor of Hong Kong’s tallest building is literally a top level experience.

6. Piérdete en Mongkok y sus mercados – Recorrer los callejones de Mongkok es conocer el auténtico Hong Kong. Durante la colonización británica, la isla de Hong Kong fungió como capital de la ciudad, así como el lugar habitacional de los europeos; los chinos no podían vivir allí. Por el contrario, Kowloon (el territorio cruzando Victoria Harbor) concentraba a la población local, así que caminar por sus avenidas, calles, mercados y rincones realmente te ofrece una versión más original de la Hong Kong de hace años. Y aunque te sentirás tentado a solamente explorar la ahora zona trendy de Tsim Sha Tsui, llena de tiendas de lujo y restaurantes, te aseguro que dedicarle un par de horas al barrio de Mongkok fascinará todos tus sentidos.

Get lost in Mongkok and its markets – Exploring the alleys and back streets of Mongkok engulfs you into the authentic Hong Kong. During the British colonization, Hong Kong Island was the economic center of the city, as well as the “European side” for living accommodations; Chinese people could not inhabit this area. On the contrary, Kowloon (the territory crossing Victoria Harbor) concentrated the local population. So walking through the inner Kowloon neighborhoods, markets and nooks really offers the traveler a more original version of the Hong Kong of old. And even though you will be tempted to stay only within the super trendy Tsim Sha Tsui area, full with high end stores and restaurants, I assure you that allocating at least a couple hours to Mongkok neighborhood will awaken your senses.

De día, conoce sus mercados locales y descubre las diferentes variedades de frutas, verduras y productos secos que conforman la dieta de los locales; admira los altos edificios repletos de apretados apartamentos; entra a las tiendas de relojes y belleza. De noche, aventúrate al famoso Ladies Market y compra souvenirs rodeada de bolsas piratas.

During the day delve into Mongkok’s local markets and discover exotic fruits, vegetables and dried up products that make up the local’s diet; admire the tall buildings dense with crammed apartments; look for bargains in watch and beauty shops. At night, adventure yourself into the famous Ladies Market and shop for souvenirs surrounded by imitation bags and wallets.

7. Descubre sus adornados templos – En Hong Kong siempre hay algo que ver. Así que si tienes un par de horas libres te recomiendo que visites algunos de los templos menos prominentes, pero igualmente interesantes. Nosotros escogimos subir las escalinatas hasta el Monasterio de los 10 Mil Buddhas. De reciente construcción (1949), el monasterio alberga literalmente 10 mil Buddhas. Desde que inicias el recorrido hacia la cima, te ves rodeada de estatuas doradas en diferentes posiciones y con distintas expresiones y objetos. Y una vez que llegues al templo principal, miles de figurillas más estarán relucientes y listas para recibirte.

Discover adorned temples – There is always something to see in Hong Kong. So if you have a couple of spare hours I recommend you visit some of the less prominent, but equally interesting temples in town. We chose to climb up the stairs to the Ten Thousand Buddha Monastery. Of recent construction (1949), the monastery is home to literally ten thousand Buddha figures. A path traced by golden statues in different positions will guide your way up to the thousand shiny Buddha figurines within the made temple.

8. Prueba las fusiones gastronómicas – Para cerrar tu fin de semana en Hong Kong con broche de oro, te recomiendo que vayas a comer a Little Bao. Este pequeñísimo restaurante en el Distrito Central de la ciudad, ofrece una deliciosa fusión entre los clásicos Bao Buns chinos y los sabores que tanto disfrutamos en occidente. Ordena las papas a la francesa con trufa y queso parmesano y la tártara de cordero para iniciar. Como principal, te recomiendo el bao bun de pancita de puerco o el de pollo frito, ¡querrás un estómago más grande para poder comer más! Y de postre, el bao de helado de sal con caramelo le dará una gran satisfacción a tu paladar.

Taste culinary fusions – To finish your weekend on a super tasty note, have a scrumptious lunch at Little Bao. This tiny locale in Central District will delight you with a yummy fusion between Chinese Bao Buns and the western flavors that we love. Get the truffled french fries with parmesan cheese and the lamb tartar to start. As your main course, the pork belly bao and the fried chicken bao will be your faves; you’ll want a bigger stomach to keep on eating! As for dessert, order the warm bao with salt ice cream and caramel drizzles!
