Weekend in Bali: Top 5 Things To Do

Bali… una isla paradisiaca que en tan solo pocos años se ha convertido en el destino favorito de muchos viajeros y parejas en su luna de miel. Y hace menos de un mes entendí por qué. Claro que había visto fotos y fotos de las villas privadas enclavadas en la selva y videos de los monos vagos en los santuarios, pero la verdad es que uno no puede sentir y entender la magia de Bali hasta que no la vive.

Bali… a paradisiac island that in only a few years has become a favorite destination for many travelers and honeymooners. And only less than a month ago I understood why. Of course I had seen dozens of photos of the luxurious private villas in the middle of the jungle and videos of the naughty monkeys in the sanctuaries and temples, but the reality is that one can’t really feel or understand Bali’s magic until you are there to live it.

Luego de mi corto paseo por esta isla de Indonesia, sólo regresé a casa queriendo más, y es que no puedo evitar sentir que sólo me dieron una probadita. Sin embargo, en lo que no ahorro para volver a visitar, tengo suficientes recomendaciones de los lugares que no se pueden perder si sólo van un par de días.

After my short trip to this Indonesian isle, I came back home wanting more. And the thing is I can’t help but feel that I only got a taste of what Bali has to offer. However, while I save up some money to visit again, I gathered enough recommendations of gorgeous places that you can’t miss on your first visit there or if you only have a couple of days.

1. Ubud – Aunque nosotros nos hospedamos en Seminyak (el viaje se realizó con el objetivo de integrarnos y conocer a los futuros compañeros de Ren en Insead y nos adaptamos a ese itinerario), para mí Ubud es el pueblo más bonito en la isla de Bali. Verde, muy verde, con árboles altísimos, calles de piedra, galerías de arte local, restaurantes de comida auténtica, cafés hip y una vibra relajada, casi serena, y un ambiente cultural, Ubud promete en sus hoteles de lujo y villas privadas, fines de semana de contemplación y romanticismo.

Ubud – Even though we stayed at Seminyak (the whole point of this trip was to get to know Ren’s future class mates at Insead, so we adapted to that itinerary), for me, Ubud is the prettiest town in Bali. Green, oh so green, with tall trees, cobbled stones, local art galleries, authentic Balinese restaurants, hip cafés, a relaxed almost serene vibe, and a palpable cultural ambiance, Ubud promises (alongside with its luxurious hotels and private villas) weekends full of romance and contemplation.

Cabe mencionar que Ubud no es sólo relajación, pues el centro palpita con el movimiento de turistas regateando en el mercado de artesanías, locales comiendo en sus restaurantes favoritos, motos, motos y más motos, y apasionados de la arquitectura y la cultura recorriendo templos como el hermosísimo Pura Taman Saraswati.

I must mention that Ubud is not only relaxation, for the center square and nearby streets palpitate with the movement of haggling tourists in the arts and crafts market, local people eating in their favorite joints, motorcycles, motorcycles and more motorcycles, and architecture fanatics exploring gorgeous temples like the outstanding Pura Taman Saraswati.

2. Terrazas de arroz de Tegallalang – A tan sólo 30 minutos del centro de Ubud, yace un paisaje que, de tan bello, parece imposible: las terrazas de arroz de Tegallalang. Así como su nombre lo anuncia, los cultivos de arroz en el sistema de terrazas -y de irrigación- típico balinés crean un panorama inusual, exótico, brillantemente verde y precioso.

Only 30 minutes away from Ubud’s center, lies a landscape so beautiful it almost seems impossible: the rice terraces of Tegallalang. Just like the name announces, the rice fields built in a terrace system (also with precise irrigation purposes) typical of the Balinese, create an exotic, unusual, brilliantly green, precious panorama.

Querrás pasar ahí por lo menos una hora para poder absorber las vistas bonitas, recorrer los caminos y senderos y tomar fotografías con calma y sin presiones. Eso sí, prepárate para la humedad y el calor: viste con ropa ligera, fresca y cómoda y usa zapatos que no te pese enlodar. Afuera de las terrazas hay tiendas de artesanías y locales con agua de coco para que te hidrates.

You’ll want to spend at least one hour there so that you can really absorb the stunning views, trek the paddies calmly, and take pictures without pressure or time constraints. That being said: prepare for the heat and humidity: wear light, fresh clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy and wet. Outside the terraces you’ll find craft stores and small shops where you can hydrate with cold coconut water.

3. Santuario Sagrado de los Monos – No sé si lo sepan, pero tengo un extraño (léase: loco) amor por ciertos animales (¡amo los pulpos! ¡amo los perezosos!), así que visitar el Santuario Sagrado de los Monos en Ubud fue otra de mis actividades favoritas del viaje. ¡De verdad, no tardé en bajarme del autobús, entrar al recinto y comprar un puño de plátanos para que los pícaros changos se me treparan!

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary – I don’t know if you know this about me, but I have a strange (read: crazy) love for certain animals (I love octopus! I love sloths!), so naturally, visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud was another of my favorite activities of the trip. I confess to being the first one out of the bus and inside the precinct buying a bunch of bananas as to have the mischievous little creatures crawling up my back!

Este santuario se ubica a menos de diez minutos del centro de Ubud y les aseguro que vale muchísimo la pena. El lugar es mágico: verde, repleto de árboles con raíces larguísimas, un templo grande que sobrevive a los estragos de la naturaleza, y monos, ¡muchísimos monos! (monos hembras, monos machos, monos viejos, monos bebés, monos recién nacidos colgando de sus madres, y monos adolescentes a la espera de que un distraído turista deje sus lentes caer), rondando sin miedo por toda el área. Planea pasar unas dos horas ahí.

This sanctuary is located less than 10 minutes away of Ubud’s center and I can assure you that it’s definitely worth a visit. The place is magical: green, brimming with trees with long, tangled roots, a big temple resistant to nature’s hardships, and monkeys, so many monkeys! Female monkeys, male monkeys, old monkeys and young monkeys; baby monkeys hanging from their mother’s neck; new born monkeys; teen monkeys lurking for distracted tourists, easy prey for sunglass robbery… Monkeys roaming around the area with no fear. Plan to spend a good two hours there.

4. Templo Uluwatu – En la punta más al sur de Bali se respira un mar ancestral. Y ahí, en el límite de un acantilado monumental de 70 metros de altura, se postra el Templo Uluwatu. Y si un templo del siglo XI, que aún se utiliza como centro de rezo y veneración, no es suficiente razón para que hagas el viaje a esta punta, las vistas de un sol que se esconde detrás del mar y los acantilados, así como el espectáculo de danza Kecak deberían hacerte cambiar de opinión.

Uluwatu Temple – In the southernmost tip of Bali you breathe an ancestral sea. And just there, in the limits of a 70 meter tall cliff rests the Uluwatu Temple. And if an XI century temple, that is still used for worship purposes, is not enough to get you to drive all the way down there, the stunning spectacle of a setting sun behind the ocean and the precipice, as well as the Kecak dance show might just do the trick.

Este templo se ubica a 2:30 horas de Ubud o a 1:20 minutos de Seminyak, así que dependerá de dónde estén hospedados.

¡Ah! Cabe mencionar que el transporte en Seminyak es bastante complicado: con motos cruzando por todos lados, calles estrechas y turistas despistados, es mejor caminar con precaución en cada momento.

Oh! It’s worth mentioning that transportation in Seminyak is complicated, to say the least: with motorcycles crossing everywhere, narrow streets and confused tourists, its better to walk with caution at every moment.

Como les dije al principio, Bali tiene muchísimo que ofrecer, y pareciera que estas cinco cosas son tan sólo el comienzo de los muchos tesoros que todo viajero tiene que descubrir en este paraíso de Indonesia. Eso sí, vayan a donde vayan empápense de la belleza de la isla: de sus templos hindús en cada esquina (cada familia y cada casa tiene el suyo), de las ofrendas con flores e incienso que decoran las calles, del arroz con curry y coco que fácilmente encontrarás en cada restaurante, de sus campos de arroz tan uniformemente recortados, de sus monos traviesos, de los mil y un spas con masajes deliciosos para tus pies, y más que nada de la buena disposición, alegría y buena vibra de su gente.

As I said to you at the beginning of this post, Bali has so much to offer. And it seems like these five things I write about are just the start of the many treasures that every traveler has to explore in this Indonesian paradise. That being said, do me a favor and do soak yourselves with Bali’s beauty: with is hindu temples in every corner (each family and house has its own), with its flower and incense offerings scattered on the floor, with its curry rice that you’ll easily find in every restaurant, with its rice fields so uniformly cut, with its naughty monkeys, with its a thousand and one spas with yummy foot massages, and most of all, with the people’s good disposition, joy and pleasant vibes.

Oaxaca’s magic will remain forever in your heart. Among its blue, yellow, pink streets; its dancing monsters in store shelves; markets bustling with crickets and grasshoppers; and smoky mezcal drinks, Oaxaca will enamore anyone who allow him or herself to get lost in its streets.

1. Vive Oaxaca – Oaxaca se vive caminando. Recorriendo sus calles descubrirás patios hermosos, recintos culturales, bordados delicados. Deja que el ritmo de la ciudad te guíe y camina sin itinerario y sin prisas durante una tarde, ¡un día entero! Así yo descubrí el interactivo Museo de la Filatelia, el resonante Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca, la tienda de ensueño de Silvia Suárez y muchas botellas de mezcal.

Oaxaca is best lived by walking. Roaming its streets and alleys you will discover charming patios, cultural spaces, delicate embroidery. Let the rhythm of the city guide you and walk without rush or itinerary for a whole afternoon, a whole day! That’s how I discovered the interactive Museo de la Filatelia (Stamp museum), the resonating Contemporary Art Museum, the dreamy clothes at Silvia Suárez and lots of bottles of mezcal.

2. Monte Albán – Entre montes y selvas del paisaje oaxaqueño, un brote esplendoroso de cultura mesoamericana dio inicio a la vida zapoteca. Y a tan sólo 30 minutos del centro histórico de la ciudad, tú puedes ir a deslumbrarte con la zona arqueológica que preserva la vibra e intelectualidad de esta cultura. Porque los zapotecas (a diferencia de lo que promueve nuestro desafortunado malinchismo mexicano) eran un pueblo educado: interesados en cuestiones médicas, en las artes, en la orfebrería, la gastronomía, ¡la música! Así que ir a explorar esos montículos cubiertos de pasto que alguna vez fueron pirámides, centros ceremoniales, canales y juegos de pelota vale totalmente la pena.

Amidst the hills and the jungle of the Oaxacan landscape, a splendorous sprout of Mesoamerican culture gave birth to the Zapotec tribe. And only 30 minutes away from downtown Oaxaca, the beautiful archeological site of Monte Alban still preserves the vibe and intellectual wisdom of the people who built it. Because the Zapotecs were educated people: curious of medical advances, of arts, of jewelry, of gastronomy, of music! So exploring these mounds and pyramids that once where ceremonial centers, canals, ball game courts and even homes, is totally worth your time.

3. Templo y Convento de Santo Domingo – El Templo de Santo Domingo es posiblemente una de las iglesias más impresionantes y hermosas que conozco. De techo alto, de numerosas capillas y de un retablo cubierto en su totalidad de figuras de oro y pinturas, Santo Domingo es digno de visita y admiración.

The Church of Santo Domingo is possibly the most impressive and beautiful sanctuary I have ever seen. With a tall ceiling, numerous chapels and an altarpiece totally covered in gold figurines and paintings, Santo Domingo will inspire more than one sigh.

El museo que alberga el convento, el Museo de las Culturas, relata de una forma sencilla e ilustrativa la historia de Oaxaca desde sus culturas prehispánicas hasta su conquista. Además sus largos y sobrios pasillos abrazan un patio lleno de belleza.

Also, the monastery adjacent to the Templo, the Museo de las Culturas, hosts a museum that narrates in a simple, but interesting way the state’s history, from its Prehispanic cultures to the Spanish invasion. Besides, just the architecture: the long sober halls, the chirping fountain in the middle of the patio.

4. Jardín Etnobotánico – Caminar por parques y arboledas es uno de mis pasatiempos preferidos. Así que visitar el Jardín Etnobotánico era parada obligatoria en mi itinerario. Ubicado en Reforma, esquina con Constitución, en el corazón de la ciudad, este pedacito de cielo alberga cientos de especies originarias y endémicas de todos los climas y regiones de Oaxaca. Es impresionante sentir cómo suben y bajan las temperaturas con tan sólo el cambio de árboles y plantas en cada cuadrante. Y aunque si visitas el Museo de las Culturas podrás observar distintos ángulos de este jardín, no hay como recorrerlo. Tan sólo la monumental pared de cactáceas es merecedora de tu tiempo.

Walking through parks and streets full of trees is one of my favorite things to do. So visiting the Jardín Etnobotánico was an obligatory activity on our itinerary. Located in Reforma, corner with Constitución (heart of the city), this piece of heaven shelters hundreds of species endemic from the different regions of Oaxaca. It’s stunning to feel how the temperatures ascend and descend just with the variation of trees and plants in each quadrant of the garden. And even when your visit to the Museo de las Culturas will give you a glance at different angles of the area, there’s nothing like wandering it. Just the monumental cacti wall is deserving of your time.

5. Hierve el Agua – Si tienes un espíritu aventurero y deseos de paisajes fantásticos, Hierve el Agua cumplirá todas tus expectativas. Y es que cascadas petrificadas de más de 200 metros de altura, y manantiales de aguas frescas con caminos a relieve, todo enclavado en un risco con paisaje salvaje, son motivo suficiente para impactar a cualquiera.

If you are an adventurous spirit in search of fantastic landscapes and views, Hierve el Agua will fulfill all your expectations. How could you not be awestricken by 200 meter tall petrified waterfalls and fresh water springs with high relief details, all pending from a cliff surrounded by wild scenery.

Hay distintas maneras de llegar a este destino a tan sólo una hora y 30 minutos de la ciudad de Oaxaca: rentar un carro ($1,500 pesos aprox.), en taxi (te cobran $200 pesos por hora), o en uno de los muchos tours que querrán venderte en el centro. Nosotros tomamos el tour que, por 350 pesos con transporte y comida incluidos, no sólo nos llevó a este fenómeno natural, sino al fantástico árbol de Santa María del Tule, ¡que con una circunferencia de 42 metros es el más grande de su especie!

There are different ways to get to Hierve el Agua. Only one hour and 30 minutes away from downtown Oaxaca, you can opt to rent a car (about $1,500 pesos); take a cab (about $200 pesos per hour); or purchase one of the many tours that for only $350 pesos (transport and food included) will not only take you to this natural phenomenon, but to the breathtaking Tule tree in Santa María del Tule, with a circumference of 42 meters, the biggest of its type!

¿Cuánto tiempo recomiendo estar en Hierve el Agua? Yo diría que para tomar fotos con calma y meterse un rato a las pozas de agua, la hora y 20 minutos que te dan en el tour es más que suficiente. Ahora que si quieres hacer una caminata tipo trail a las segundas cascadas, sí necesitarías al menos 40 minutos más.

How much time should you spend in Hierve el Agua? I’d say that the hour and 20 minutes that the tour allows is enough to take incredible pictures and even take a dip into the pools of fresh water. But if you want to trod the trail that leads to the second waterfall, you should plan on staying 40 minutes more.

Decidas lo que decidas, puedo asegurarte que lo que comenzó como escurrimientos de agua carbonatada hace millones de años y ahora guiña como seductivo atractivo turístico, permanecerá toda la vida en tu corazón.

Whatever you decide, I can assure you that what started as runoffs from carbonated water millions of years ago and now winks as an attractive tourist site, will resonate forever in your heart.

6. Comer/Eat – Una de las herencias culturas más importantes de Oaxaca es su gastronomía. Su ubicación privilegiada ha consentido la cosecha y el acceso a productos, hierbas y especias de las que probablemente jamás has oído, ¡y mucho menos probado! Así que deja que Oaxaca conquiste tu barriga, y tal como platiqué en la entrada pasada, emprende un recorrido culinario que jamás olvidarás. Adéntrate en los mercados y prueba los chapulines y el mole negro; entra en una antojería como Zandunga y prueba las tlayudas; descubre el helado de queso de cabra y hierba santa en Manolo; tómate un chocolate calientito en el Quinta Real o un tejate en la plaza de Santo Domingo; vaya, ¡que hasta los esquites en Oaxaca saben mejor!

Oaxaca’s gastronomy is fundamental to its heritage. The state’s privileged location has allowed for the growth and harvest of produce and herbs that you’ve probably never heard of, much less tried! So let Oaxaca seduce your tripe. And just as I suggested (commanded!) on my last post, embark a culinary tour you will never forget. Step into Oaxaca’s markets and try the crickets, worms and mole negro; enter a fonda or kitsch spot like Zandunga and savor a tlayuda; discover the goat cheese and hierba santa ice cream at Manolo’s; sip hot chocolate at Quinta Real and drink tejate in the main plaza. I mean, even corn tastes better in Oaxaca!

7. Tomar mezcal/Drink mezcal – Más del 90% del mezcal se produce en Oaxaca, así que no es de extrañarnos que el estado esté directamente asociado con esta bebida alcohólica de agave. Así que sí, tomar mezcal, catarlo, degustarlo, experimentarlo en su máxima expresión artesanal es obligación de todo viajero por Oaxaca. Y quiero invitarte a que no te limites a tomarte un mezcal en el restaurante coqueto donde comas o cenes. ¡No! Realmente, la manera de aprender y disfrutar más es probando. Es aprovechar la abundancia de expendios y cantinas para entrar en ellas, absorber el panorama y movimiento de las calles y pedirle al bartender que te ayude a escoger un mezcalito que sea de tu agrado. Y por cada bar, otro mezcal. Sólo así descubrirás que el mundo del mezcal es mucho más que un espadín joven.

More than 90% of mezcal is produced in Oaxaca. So it is to no surprise that this Mexican state is directly related to this alcoholic beverage. So, yes: drinking, tasting, sampling and experimenting mezcal in its most artisanal expression is a responsibility for every traveler that visits Oaxaca. And I want to insist, that you mustn’t limit yourself to one drink at a fancy restaurant while you have lunch or dinner. No! The best way to learn and enjoy mezcal is by drinking and drinking and drinking. So make the most of the abundance of bars, cantinas, mezcalerias and expendios: walk inside, take in the bustling streets and ask the bartender to pick out a mezcal you might enjoy. And for every bar, another mezcal.

Yo tuve la fortuna de ir a Santiago Matatlán a la destilería de Los Danzantes y Alipús, y allí conocer todo el proceso de producción de la bebida, además de que catamos más de nueve variedades diferentes.

I had the privilege to visit Los Danzantes’ distillery in Santiago Matatlán, to learn and witness the production of this Prehispanic beverage. Plus, I got to taste more than nine different varieties!

Otro lugar ideal para adentrarte al mundo del mezcal, es en Los Amantes, un expendio en Allende 107, decorado con flores de papel picado de colores, botellas de cristal, máscaras de animales, pinturas de mujeres desnudas y los remanentes de muchísimas botellas de mezcal. Pide la degustación y la bebida de la casa, no te arrepentirás.

Another ideal place to discover mezcal is Los Amantes: an expendio in Allende 107 decorated with colorful paper flowers, crystal bottles, animal masks, paintings of nude women and the remainders of old bottles of mezcal. Ask for the tasting and the drink of the house; you won’t regret it!

8. Otros lugares – Los cinco días que visité Oaxaca fueron insuficientes para explorar todos los lugares y pueblitos a sus alrededores. Sugiero que planeen bien sus tiempos para que expriman sus horas y minutos lo más que puedan y consigan un balance entre saborear las comidas y los espacios con calma y madrugar para conocer lo más que puedan. Otros lugares merecedores de su atención son: Teotitlán (el pueblo donde tejen los tapetes, pies de cama y almohadones), San Antonio Arrazola o San Martín Tilcajete (pueblos donde cobran vida los alebrijes), San Bartolo Coyotepec (donde te enseñan sobre la elaboración del barro negro) y Mitla (otra zona arqueológica distinguida por sus grecas).

The five days I stayed in Oaxaca were just not enough to explore all the small towns and pueblos in its surroundings. I suggest you plan ahead and divide your time wisely so that you can make the most of every hour and minute you posess. And also so that you can achieve a perfect balance between savoring a meal with calm and peace, and running around like crazy trying to go to all the magical places. Machu Picchu: joya invaluable del Perú

¡Las ganas que tengo de compartirles esta maravillosa experiencia! ¡Machu Picchu! ¡Qué lugar tan mágico, tan increíble, tan inolvidable! Les confieso que yo tenía miedo de llegar a Machu Picchu y de pronto darme cuenta que las expectativas rebasaban la realidad… De tanto ver fotos y videos, de tanto leer crónicas y diarios de viaje… temí que ya había visto lo que había que ver, o por lo menos lo mejor de la zona arqueológica.

The excitement I feel to finally share with you this marvelous experience! Machu Picchu! What a magical, incredible, unforgettable place! I admit I was scared to get to the astonishing Machu Picchu and realize my expectations had been to high… With all the pictures and videos and journals I had seen and read, I feared I had seen what had to be seen.

¡Pero qué tonto temor! Machu Picchu me dejó boquiabierta. Sin duda fue la experiencia más hermosa de mi viaje a Perú y no puedo recomendarlo lo suficiente. Así que hoy les compartiré toda mi aventura y todos mis consejos para que vayan súper preparados cuando decidan visitar.

What a silly concern! Machu Picchu left me dumbfounded! Without a doubt this hidden city was the most beautiful experience of my trip to Peru and I can’t recommend it enough. So today I will share with you my adventure and all my tips.

Hay varias maneras de llegar a Machu Picchu dependiendo de dónde en el Valle Sagrado se encuentren. Yo recomiendo que lleguen en tren, puesto que es lo más rápido y cómodo, ¡además de que es una experiencia padrísima! Hay un par de trenes que pueden tomar, nosotros elegimos y recomendamos Perú Rail, la empresa con más años de experiencia. Si me hacen caso y optan por el tren los invito a que escojan el Vistadome, siempre y cuando vayan de día, y más delante les platicaré por qué. Si su recorrido en tren será ya cuando no hay sol, váyanse en la opción barata, y guarden su dinero para regresar en el Vistadome.

You can get to Machu Picchu in various ways depending on where you are in the Sacred Valley. I recommend you take the train, just because it is faster and more comfortable. Plus, it’s is a superb experience! There are a couple of train companies you can choose from. We took Peru Rail, the oldest of the companies in the business. If you follow my advice and take the train, I further invite you to book a ticket on the Vistadome; I’ll tell you why in just a few! However, if your train ride will be during the night, just go for the cheaper seats and save money so that you can take the Vistadome on your way back.

A sugerencia de amigos y conocidos (¡y TripAdvisor!), decidimos llegar a dormir a Aguas Calientes la noche antes de nuestra visita a Machu Picchu. ¡Y corroboramos que es la mejor opción! ¿Por qué? Sencillamente porque queríamos llegar a la zona arqueológica antes que toda la multitud para conseguir fotos espectaculares y además vivenciar una experiencia más mística y natural.

Well informed by friends and family (and TripAdvisor!), we decided to sleep in the small town of Aguas Calientes on the night before our hike to Machu Picchu. And this is truly the best option! Why? Simply because we wanted to get to the site early enough as to dodge the crowds and get the best pictures and more mystical and natural experience.

Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes es un pueblito pequeño y está a tan sólo 20 minutos en bus de Machu Picchu (1 hora caminando), y como realmente no tiene mucho atractivo, ni hay mucho que hacer, más que es la población mas cercana a la zona arqueológica, optamos por llegar de noche, después de un día de recorrer Pisac y Ollantaytambo. Así, arribamos a eso de las 20:30 horas a dejar las cosas en el hotel y a comprar nuestro ticket para el autobús que abordaríamos al día siguiente en la mañana. El ticket lo compran enfrente de la parada de buses y cuesta $24 dólares redondo. Y sí es mejor comprarlo desde antes para ahorrarte una fila el mero día en la madrugada.

Aguas Calientes is a small town only a 20 minute bus ride away from Machu Picchu (1 hour walking). And since the only attraction to the town is that it is the closest pueblo from the archeological site, we opted to get there by night, after a busy day of exploring Pisac and Ollantaytambo. So we got to Aguas Calientes at around 20:30 hours, left our stuff in the hotel and headed to buy our bus ticket for Machu Picchu. You can buy the bus ticket just in front of the bus stop for $24 dollars round trip. If you buy it the night before your excursion you will save your self from waiting on another line on the important day.

Después de cenar algo por ahí en el pueblo, váyanse a alistar sus cosas (mochila, snacks, cámara, etc.) y a dormir, ya que la despertada del siguiente día llegará muy de madrugada.

After munching on some dinner in the town, go straight to your hotel and get your backpack, snacks, camera, and even outfit ready and go straight to bed. You are in for an early rise!

Para ganarle a los bullicios y tumultos, es necesario madrugar. Y madrugar, lo que se dice madrugar. Porque si ya se fueron a dormir a Aguas Calientes es para asegurarse de que serán de las primeras personas en llegar a la zona arqueológica.

To beat the buzzing crowds and swarms of tourists you must wake up before dawn. Specially if you made all your way to Aguas Calientes on the night before! The stay at this town will be a complete waste if you don’t!

¿Mi recomendación? Que se levanten lo suficientemente temprano para que entre 5 y 5:30 de la mañana ya estén formados en la fila del bus. Nosotros llegamos a la fila a las 5:30, ¡y ya hicimos 40 minutos de espera! Lo bueno es que para Machu Picchu hay que ir cómodos, así que arreglarse no será algo que los demore demasiado.

What is my suggestion? Wake up early enough so that you can be in the line for the bus between 5:00 and 5:30 in the morning! We got to the bus wait line at 5:30, and got a seat on a bus only 40 minutes later! The good thing is that Machu Picchu requires comfortable clothes, so it shouldn’t be a hassle to get dressed and ready.

Les paso otro tip. Nosotros nos alojamos el en hotel Tierra Viva Machu Picchu, y no sólo está súper bien ubicado, sino que sirven el desayuno desde las 4:30 de la mañana, así que hasta desayunado puedes salir.

Here’s another tip: stay at the Tierra Viva Machu Picchu Hotel! Not only does it have the best location, but they serve a full breakfast as early as 4:30 am!

¡Compra tus boletos con anticipación!/Buy your tickets in advance!
Luego de hacer la fila del bus por 40 minutos, más los 20 minutos de trayecto, llegamos a Machu Picchu a eso de las 6:30 am. Nosotros compramos nuestro boleto para la zona arqueológica con casi tres meses de anticipación, ¡y sí se agotan así que no esperen llegar ese mismo día sin boleto en mano! Y además, también compramos boleto para subir una de las dos montañas adecuadas para que los turistas disfruten de una vista panorámica de las ruinas. Estas dos cimas son la montaña Machu Picchu y la montaña Huayna Picchu, ¡y también se agotan las entradas con semanas de anticipación, así que asegúrense de comprar la suya con tiempo!

After a 40 minute wait line and a 20 minute bus ride, we finally made it to Machu Picchu. Think 6:30 am. My husband and I got our tickets to Machu Picchu with almost three months in advance! And they do sell out! So be sure to buy them ahead! Also, we got another ticket to climb one of the two peaks tourists can hike to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the inca ruins. These two summits are Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu Mountain, and tickets for the hike also sell out, so buy them in advance if you are interested!

Nosotros elegimos la montaña Machu Picchu por una sencilla razón: le tengo un poco de miedo a las alturas. Y aunque esta cima es más alta que la Huayna Picchu, el camino para llegar es más ancho y menos empinado, así como visualmente menos aterrador. Cuando compras tu boleto a la montaña también eliges tu hora de subida: de 7 a 9 am o de 9 a 11. Nosotros nos fuimos por la segunda opción.

I am scared of heights, so Machu Picchu Mountain was the best choice for us. Even though this mountain is higher, the trail to the top is wider, less steep, and visually less mortifying. We got the 9:00-11:00 entrance time.

Así que cuando llegamos a Machu Picchu a las 6:30 am, contábamos con tiempo de sobra para darle un buen recorrido a una de las zonas arqueológicas más impresionantes que yo haya tenido la fortuna de conocer.

So when we finally arrived to Machu Picchu at around 6:30 am, we had enough time on our hands to explore one of the most impressive archeological sites I’ve been lucky enough to witness.

Todo Machu Picchu resuena y pulsa con una vibra especial, y cada rincón ofrece una foto inolvidable. Desde que entras y das los primeros pasos, sientes que pisas tierras sagradas, ancestrales. Tierras que saben más del mundo que tú y que cualquiera. Tómate tu tiempo para absorber el paisaje: las montañas escarpadas, le vegetación verde, la ciudad inca intacta. Escucha, respira, siente.

All of Machu Picchu pulses with a special vibe, and every corner offers an astonishing photo. As soon as you enter, you feel you are treading on sacred, ancestral land. Grounds that know more about the world than you or anybody. Take your time to take in the landscape: the steep mountains, the green vegetation, the untouched inca city. Listen, breathe, feel.

Y una vez que hayas tenido tu primer sorbito de la impactante Machu Picchu sube al spot esperado para la foto de postal. Contra lo que indican la mayoría de los tours y guías, empieza con esa foto. Aprovecha que llegaste temprano y que aún no ha llegado la muchedumbre para capturar la imagen perfecta sin prisas y con calma. Si lo dejas para el final de tu recorrido por la zona arqueológica te será más complicado tomar una foto sin personas al fondo. Ya con la foto en tu cámara, ahora sí regresa al punto de partida y piérdete en la grandeza de la zona.

And once you’ve tasted your first sip of the wonderful Machu Picchu, climb up to the coveted picture spot. Against what all tour guides will tell you, begin with this photo. Take advantage of getting there early and that the majority of the tourists haven’t arrived yet to take your treasured Machu Picchu shot with peace! If you wait until the end of the day, I assure you it will be tougher to get a person free photo!

Si no contrataste un guía, ¡no te preocupes! La mayoría es muy amable y te invitarán a que te unas a su grupo sin costo alguno. Ellos quieren enseñarte sobre su cultura, aún si sólo se ganan una propina.

Also, if you don’t hire a tour guide, don’t fret! Most of them are kind and will invite you to tag along and listen once you are in the site for no cost! Their main interest is to share with as many people as possible all about their inca culture.

La grandeza de Machu Picchu habla por sí sola. Una ciudad completa en medio de las montañas más altas, remotas e inaccesibles que hayas visto despierta la admiración y curiosidad de cualquier viajero. Recorre los caminos estrechos, asómate por las ventanas escondidas, descubre el Templo de la Luna, imagínate viviendo en la choza de paja, convive con las llamas, y sobre todo permítete gozar de tanta fascinación y felicidad.

The greatness of Machu Picchu speaks for itself. An advanced city in the middle of the highest, most remote and inaccessible mountains you have ever seen will touch every bit of awe and curiosity any traveller possesses. Tread the narrow paths; peep out of hidden windows; discover the Moon Temple; imagine a bustling village; play with the llamas; and, above all, allow yourself to relish amongst all the happiness and fascination.

Como ya les comentaba, Ren y yo subimos la montaña Machu Picchu en nuestra visita a este sitio de sueños. Habíamos leído tantos comentarios contrastantes sobre el tiempo que nos tomaría subir, que realmente esperábamos lo peor: 3 horas de pura subida. Pero por suerte, realmente subimos a la cima en tan sólo la mitad. Eso sí, fueron 90 minutos de puros escalones altos, al ras de imponentes acantilados, así que lleven ropa súper cómoda y ligera, me lo van a agradecer. Les repito: yo le temo a las alturas. Y aunque algunos momentos de la trepada sí me intimidaron, puedo asegurarles que cada gota de sudor y cada susto de miedo valió la pena. La vista desde arriba es un sueño. Machu Picchu parece diminuto, inalcanzable. Y las nubes vienen y van, envolviéndote e interrumpiendo la vista de vez en cuando. El centro, la cima del mundo, y tú estás ahí para presenciarlo.

As I said before, Ren and I climbed up Machu Picchu Mountain. We had read so many contrasting comments about how long it will take to get to the top, that we really expected and were prepared for the worse: 3 hours! Luckily, it took us only 90 minutes to get up. The hike however was indeed difficult: mostly tall steps along imposing cliffs! So please, take comfortable shoes and light clothes, you will thank me once you’re there! That being said, every step, every drop of sweat, every intimidating moment, was worth it! The view from atop is a dream. Machu Picchu seems so tiny, unreachable. And the clouds come and go, dancing, enveloping you, interrupting the view every once in a while. The center, the peak of the world, and you are there to live it.

El regreso/The way back
Ya con las rodillas (y los quadriceps y las pantorrillas y las nalgas) cansadas y doloridas, (de bajada el trayecto duró 75 minutos), tuvimos oportunidad de regresar a tomar algunas fotos a la zona arqueológica antes de alcanzar el bus de vuelta a Aguas Calientes. En el pueblo teníamos que estar alrededor de las 16 horas, puesto que nuestro tren salía de vuelta a eso de las 16:45 horas.

With our knees (and quadriceps and sheens and butts) tired and sore (the climb down took us another 75 minutes), we had time left to take some more photos of the inca citadel before heading back to Aguas Calientes. We had to be in the pueblo by 4:00 pm, since our train headed back at 4:45 pm.

Vistadome
Para cerrar nuestro día en Machu Picchu con broche de oro, nos aseguramos de comprar boletos para regresar a Ollantaytambo en el Vistadome. El Vistadome es la versión de medio lujo de Perú Rail ¡y vale totalmente la pena vivir la experiencia! A diferencia de nuestra ida a Aguas Calientes, nuestro regreso sí lo haríamos con luz de día, así que las ventanas extra grandes del Vistadome, eran merecedoras del upgrade. ¡Pero nos llevamos mucho más! Porque lo especial del Vistadome no son sólo sus ventanas y el paisaje natural a lo largo del Río Urubamba, sino el mantel bordado que te ponen sobre la mesa, los snacks tradicionales que te calman el hambre, la música tradicional de fondo, el cafecito con leche que te mantiene caliente, la representación de un baile típico por parte de un hombre enmascarado, y hasta el desfile de modas que pone el ambiente.

To conclude our wondrous day in Machu Picchu, we made sure we got tickets for the Vistadome train to make our way back to Ollantaytambo. The Vistadome is the Peru Rail medium upscale train and it is a beaut! Contrary from our way to Aguas Calientes, we made our way back to Ollantaytambo in the light of day, so the extra large windows the Vistadome offers were worth the upgrade. But we took so much more than just big windows! I definitely enjoyed the magnificent views of the forests along the Urubamba River, but the Vistadome rounded the experience with embroidered table paths, traditional inca snacks (fruit and quinoa pizzas), folk background music, coffee to keep you warm, a representation of a typical dance by a masked man, and even a fashion show!

Nuestra visita a Machu Picchu fue sinceramente inmejorable. Entre la fortuna de llegar y sentir que teníamos la montaña para nosotros solos, el día soleado y rico, las llamas graciosas, la trepada a la cima de la montaña, y las expectativas rebasadas en el tren, me quedo con una experiencia inolvidable y valiosísima de esta joya de los incas; una que invito a todos a explorar.

Honestly, our Machu Picchu adventure was unbeatable! Getting there early, having the site almost to ourselves, the sunny day, the funny llamas, the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain, and the surprises on the Vistadome, made for an invaluable and unforgettable experience in this inca jewel.

San Blas: joya turquesa en el Caribe panameño

Para mí no hay mejores vacaciones para relajarse que una visita a la playa. Claro, prefiero vivir en urbes grandes, me encanta viajar a destinos inusitados, pago por que me acompañen a Europa, pero si realmente quiero un día relax, la playa es mi mejor aliada. ¡Qué suerte la mía que Panamá esconde un paraíso de sol radiante y aguas claras!

For me there are no better vacations to relax than a visit to the beach. Sure, I rather live in big cities; I love traveling to exotic destinations; I pay for people to come with me to Europe… but if I really want to breathe easy and unwind, the beach is my best ally! Lucky for me, Panama safeguards a paradise with radiant sun and clear waters!

Y justo de este lugar les quiero platicar hoy. Con 378 islas, San Blas es un hermoso archipiélago ubicado al noroeste del país, sobre el Mar Caribe. Y aunque llegar a las islas requiere de un espíritu temerario, una vez que te encuentras acostada en la arena, tomando una cerveza, admirando el azul del mar sabes que la desmañanada ha valido la pena.

And this is just what I want to talk to you about today. With more than 378 islands, San Blas is a beautiful archipelago located on the northwestern end of the country, right on the Caribbean Sea. And even though getting to this chain of islands requires an intrepid spirit, once you find yourself laying on the sand, admiring the turquoise waters and sipping on a cold beer you will know for a fact that the hassle was all worth it.

Yo he gozado dos veces de este cielo. La primera vez cuando recién llegué a la ciudad de Panamá acompañada de mi mamá, y la segunda con Ren, casi como despedida de esta nación (¡nuevas aventuras nos esperan!). En ambas ocasiones el itinerario fue prácticamente el mismo y les aseguro que es la mejor opción para disfrutar de esta maravilla natural si sólo cuentan con pocos días en el país o si las situaciones rústicas no son sus favoritas.

I’ve enjoyed this heavenly spot twice. First, when I had just arrived to Panama City in company of my mom; and second, with Ren almost as a parting gift from this country (new adventures await us!). On both occasions the itinerary was practically the same, and I can assure you this is the best way to revel in this natural wonder if you are short on time or rustic settings scare you.

Sobre la comarca/About the semiautonomous territory

Las más de 350 islas de San Blas son parte de la comarca indígena de los Guna Yala. Esto quiere decir que aunque se ubica y tiene su representación en Panamá, se rige con normas y leyes diferentes al resto de la nación. Por esto mismo, hay un retén de seguridad en la carretera que te lleva al Puerto Cartí. En el retén te pedirán tu pasaporte y el del resto de tus acompañantes para revisar los sellos de ingreso al país y constatar la legalidad de su estatus migratorio. ¡Si olvidas tu pasaporte no te dejarán ingresar así que mételo en tu mochila o bolsa desde una noche antes!

The more than 350 islands comprise de semiautonomous territory of the Guna Yala aborigines. This means that even when the province nestles inside of Panamanian territory and the group has representation in the Panamanian government, it has its own independent set of laws. For this reason, you will find a security checkpoint on the road to Puerto Cartí. At the revision point, your passport will be examined in search of your entry stamps to the country, as to confirm the legality of your migratory status. If you forget your passport the Gunas will deny you entry to their district, so pack it up a night before your trip!

Para los Gunas (¡y ojalá lo fuera para todos nosotros!), la naturaleza es la madre sagrada y divinidad más importante. Por lo mismo, es menester para ellos mantener la pureza, limpieza y estado natural de sus tierra y aguas. De hecho, los alrededor de 60 mil aborígenes que pueblan San Blas, se concentran en sólo 40 islas, donde viven en chozas de caña con techos de palmera y se alimentan de mariscos como el pargo, el caracol y la langosta. Para preservar sus tierras aún más, los Gunas no consienten la construcción de resorts ni baños con sistemas completos de drenaje, o sea, si te quedas a dormir es en cabañas rústicas o tiendas de campaña y si usas el baño le tienes que echar un cubetazo de agua.

To the Gunas (I wish this ideology was the same for everyone!), nature embodies the sacred mother of all beings and most divine deity. As a result, maintaining the purity, immaculateness and natural state of their lands and waters tops their priorities. In fact, the approximately 60 thousand Guna people that populate the archipelago inhabit only 40 isles, where they live in huts made from dried sugar cane and palm tree leaves and feed off of fish, snails and lobsters. To preserve their territory even more, the Guna tribe prohibits the construction of resorts and even bathrooms with a complete sewage system. In other words, if you sleep over you will sleep in rustic shacks, and if you use the bathrooms you will pour a bucket of water in the toilet.

Recomiendo que contraten su day tour con Happy Landing o con Guna Yala Explorer, aunque resalto el puntual servicio que nos brindó Happy Landing. ¿Se puede hacer el viaje solo? Sí, siempre que cuentes con un carro 4×4, de lo contrario no te dejarán ingresar a la carretera que lleva a la comarca. También puedes llegar en velero o en avión, pero resulta mucho más costoso. Nosotros optamos en tomar el tour de ida y vuelta el mismo día.

I highly recommend you hire your tour with Happy Landing or Guna Yala Explorer; though I definitely want to highlight the punctual service we got from Happy Landing. Can you get to San Blas on your own? Yes! As long as you own a 4×4 car you can get to Puerto Cartí on your own and there pay for the boat ride to the islands. However, if you don’t have a 4×4 you will be invited to head back home. You can also choose to get to San Blas on a sailboat or by plane, but these options will cost you quite a bit more money. We opted for the day trip.

¡Pasan por ti a tu hotel o apartamento entre las 5:00 y 5:30 de la mañana! Así que más vale tener todo listo desde un día antes y poner un par de alarmas para no quedarse dormido. Nosotros el día anterior armamos una hielera con cervezas, hielo, papas y fruta para llevarnos snacks y bebidas para la jornada. También puedes comprar cervezas y refrescos por allá, pero si quieres ahorrarte unos dólares te sugiero que vayas preparado.

Your driver will pick you up at your apartment or hotel between 5:00 and 5:30 in the morning (depending where you are located)! So you better plan ahead and have everything ready on the night before, as well as set a couple of alarms to prevent you from dozing off! We packed a cooler with beer, ice, chips and fruit on the night before. You can find small huts that sell refreshments on the islands, but if you want to save a couple of bucks, leaving prepared is the way to go.

Recorres la carretera hasta Puerto Cartí con un total de seis acompañantes y el chofer, por lo que realmente sales de la ciudad de Panamá a eso de las 5:50 de la madrugada. Demoras una hora y cuarenta minutos hasta este punto. El camino es uno de los más sinuosos y empinados -aunque muy verde y bonito- que yo haya experimentado, así que si eres de los que se marea con facilidad te sugiero que pidas estar cerca de la ventana y hasta tomarte media pastillita de dramamine antes de partir. You travel the highway all the way until Puerto Cartí with a total of six companions in your van, which means you actually leave the city at 5:50 in the morning. The car part of the trip lasts about an hour and 40 minutes. Tight turns and steep hills pave the journey so if you are prone to seasickness I suggest you ask for a window seat or even take half of a dramamine pill before you begin the expedition.

Una vez en Puerto Cartí esperas a que tu guía te presente al ayudante Guna (casi todos los tours son operados exclusivamente por gente Guna) con quien harás el recorrido por las islas. Ten paciencia, la logística podrá parecer un poco desorganizada, pero ellos están pendientes de ti y no te dejarán olvidado en ningún lado.

Once you arrive at Puerto Cartí, you need to wait for your guide or his assistant (all tours are operated by Guna people), who will pilot your boat to the islands. Be patient! The logistics might seem a bit disorganized, but the Gunas do keep an eye on you and will not leave you stranded.

Navegas 40 minutos en la lancha hasta tu primera isla, en nuestro caso, Isla Perro. Observar el mar cambiar de azul oscuro a turquesa, a verde y a hasta casi blanco y admirar las islas colmadas de palmeras que parecen espolvoreadas a lo ancho del agua te sumerge en un estado casi espiritual de fascinación. ¡Este mundo es maravilloso y cuenta con el océano como una de sus mayores evidencias!

After a 40 minute navigation you reach your first destination. In our case this was Isla Perro. Observing the ocean water fluctuate from dark blue, to turquoise, to green and even white, and admiring the isles brimming with palm trees scattered along submerges you into an almost spiritual state of fascination. This world is gorgeous and it tenders its seas as evidence!

Once you hit solid land, it’s time to relish! The curves and waves rest behind and there is only pleasure in the horizon. Soak in the sea; tan on the sand; dream under the palm trees; open your beer; explore the cay and discover the starfish and the sea shells that the small refuge protects.

Al paso de dos horas será momento de volver a abordar la lancha para encaminarse a la segunda isla del itinerario; es en esta donde comerán. Cuando visité con mi mamá me tocó conocer Isla Fragata; cuando regresé con Ren, el almuerzo lo hicimos en Isla Puerco. La verdad es que las islas se asemejan muchísimo entre sí, quizá el tono del agua es lo que realmente las distingue a la vista del turista inexperto. En todo caso, la comida en ambas locaciones consistió de pescado frito (o pollo si no comen mariscos) con arroz, patacones o frijoles y un refresco. ¡Sencillo pero sabroso! Una vez devorada la comida, tendrán tiempo para continuar jugando en el agua o reposar mientras disfrutan del paisaje. ¡Aprovechen este tiempo para platicar con su guía y aprender un poco más de la cultura Guna!

After a couple of hours your guide will instruct you to hop on the boat again so that you can procede to your next island, where you will lunch. When I visited San Blas with my mom we got to eat at Isla Fragata; my second time around with Ren, our food awaited at Isla Puerco. All the islands seem quite similar and the pattern the change in the ocean’s water color creates might be the only hint that helps the amateur tourist tell them apart. In any case, the menu in both islands consisted of fried fish (you may ask for chicken instead) with rice and beans or patacones (plantain chips). Simple, but delicious! You can continue to scout the isle once you finish up your meal. Take advantage of this time to ask your guide some questions about the Guna culture.

La última parada en el itinerario es la piscina natural. En medio de las islas, en lo que pareciera el centro de la inmensidad del mar, existen bancos de arena de aguas transparentes y poca profundidad donde puedes nadar en agua templada y tener contacto con especies marinas como estrellas de mar y hasta mantarrayas. Según los Gunas, las piscinas solían ser islas que se hundieron a causa de un tsunami que azotó el área. Flotar aquí es una de mis partes favoritas del tour: sentirme en cercano contacto con el océano y sus criaturas me parece muy especial. Eso sí, lleven un sombrero porque su piel quedará completamente expuesta al brillante sol.

The natural pool is the last stop on the program. Between islands, in what resembles to be the middle of nowhere, sand banks with translucent waters and shallow depths exist. Here you can swim in warm water and observe marine wildlife like starfish and even stingrays. According to the Gunas, these pools where islands that sunk after a tsunami struck the area. Floating here is one of my favorite parts of the tour: feeling so close and in touch with the ocean and its creatures strikes me as unique and special. That being said, bring a hat! There is no shade to hide under when in the natural pool, and you stay there for a good half an hour!

La diversión llega a su fin a eso de las tres de la tarde, cuando el guía pide que regreses al bote para emprender el camino de regreso el puerto y posteriormente de vuelta a casa. Con suerte y sin tráfico, estarás tomándote un baño caliente en tu hogar a las 7 de la noche.

The fun comes to an end at 3:00 pm, when your Guna guide asks you to board the boat so that you can make your way back to the port, and then back home. With some luck and little traffic, you’ll enjoy a hot shower in your own house at around 7:00 in the evening.

Canal de Panamá: un requisito en tu bucket list

¡Hola a todos! ¡El post que habían estado esperando desde que llegué a Panamá por fin toma forma y es una realidad! Jaja, bueno, quizá no. Pero sin duda es extraño que me haya tomado casi siete meses para escribir de uno de los íconos del país: ¡el canal! Pero la verdad no quería escribir sobre esta maravilla de la ingeniería sin visitar tanto las esclusas de Miraflores (las originales y primeras), como las nuevas de Agua Clara. ¿Y qué creen? ¡Qué por fin me di a la tarea de ir! ¡Y valió toda la pena!

Hey everyone! The post you had all been waiting for since I got to Panama is finally here! Ha, well maybe not. But anyways, it is quite strange that I took almost seven months to write about one of the country’s most emblematic sites: the canal! Honestly, I didn’t want to share with you about this wonder of engineering until I visited the original Miraflores locks and the new Agua Clara locks. And I finally got to it and it was completely worth it!

Así que hoy quiero platicarles un poco más sobre sus opciones para visitar el canal, dependiendo de su tiempo y disponibilidad, y además darles datos curiosos sobre su construcción, capacidad y aportes para que se asombren igual que yo.

So today I am thrilled to give you all the details for your future visit, taking into account the amount of time and availability you have.

Para empezar: ¿qué es el famoso Canal de Panamá? En resumen: es un canal que cruza el punto más angosto de Panamá para conectar el Océano Pacífico con el Océano Atlántico. Sin embargo, su existencia no puede resumirse tan sencillamente, pues esta inmensa obra es fruto de años de esfuerzo, cambios de dueños y constructores, así como de amplia investigación, innovación y mano de obra.

To start: what is the Panama Canal? In summary: it is a waterway that cross the slimmest point of Panama built to connect the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. However, the Canal’s existence cannot be summed up as simply, seeing that it is a feat of years of effort, owner changes, construction and superb research, innovation and labor.

Un poco de historia/A little history

Francia inició la construcción del Canal de Panamá en 1881. No obstante, no fueron los franceses quienes concluyeron la obra, ya que por enfermedades y conflictos políticos abandonaron los trabajos. Los estadunidenses consiguieron entonces los derechos de explotación y construcción del Canal (Panamá recién se había separado de Colombia en una revolución), y fueron ellos quienes terminaron las obras en 1914. El 15 de agosto de ese año, el barco de vapor Ancón inauguró los tránsitos. Los americanos tuvieron el control del Canal hasta el 31 de diciembre de 1999, fecha en que el Tratado Torrijos-Carter (Torrijos, jefe de Gobierno de Panamá y Carter, Presidente de Estados Unidos), cedía el control al país donde se ubica.

France began the Canal’s construction in 1881. However, due to sickness and political conflicts the french did not complete the challenge. It was the United States of America who took over the construction (Panama had just recently become a country after is separation from Colombia!) and finished the deed in 1914. The 15th of August of that same year, the S.S. Ancon inaugurated one of man’s greatest marvels. Panama did not get power over the Canal until December 21st 1991, with the signing of the Torrijos-Carter treaty.

Sinceramente la historia del Canal es larga y algo confusa, así que voy a dejar eso un poco de lado (si quieren saber más encuentran abundante información aquí o aquí o aquí) para mejor compartirles mi experiencia y darles mis tips y recomendaciones para que puedan disfrutarlo cuando decidan conocer.

Sincerely, the Canal’s history is long and confusing, so I will leave that aside (you can find more information here or here or here) to better share with you my experience and my tips so that you can fully enjoy it when you visit.

Información básica/Basic information

No sé si sepan pero el Canal de Panamá no tiene sólo una vía, sino cuatro. En sus 77 kilómetros de extensión, hay tres esclusas que permiten el tránsito de buques de carga y hasta veleros. ¿Y cómo funciona? Las esclusas (compuertas que se abren o cierran para detener o permitir el flujo del agua) elevan las naves 26 metros sobre el nivel del mar, al lago artificial Gatún, para luego volverlas a bajar del otro lado. Obvio todo esto tiene una explicación mucho más detallada y asombrosa, pero eso ya lo escucharán cuando visiten.

I don’t know if you are aware of this, but the Panama Canal has more than one entrance. It has four! The Canal encompasses 77 kilometers and within this huge stretch of water are the four locks that allow boats, cruises, ships and even sailboats to cross from one ocean to the other. And how does it work? The locks (doors that open or close to allow or stop the flow of water) help rise the ships 85 feet above sea level and into artificial Lake Gatun, so that they can then come back down on the other side. This process obviously is lengthier and more complex than it sounds, but you can fill yourself on all the details during your visit.

Y ¿por qué les digo que tienen dos opciones para visitar el Canal? La razón principal es que desde el 2016 hay dos Centros de Visitantes a los que puedes ir, pues el Canal emprendió un ambicioso proyecto de ampliación que dio como resultado las nuevas y más grandes esclusas de Agua Clara. Eso sí, hay reglas de oro que no cambian sin importar las esclusas por las que se quiera cruzar. Por ejemplo, sólo un panameño puede dirigir y manejar las naves a través del canal. Así que si un buque viene de China o Estados Unidos con capitanes de sus respectivos países, hay un cambio de cabeza antes de ingresar al Canal. Una vez terminado el cruce, los capitanes de los barcos pueden retomar el control de su nave.

And why do I say you have two options to visit the Canal? The main reason is that since the Canal’s expansion project ended in 2016 with a brand new set of locks in Agua Clara (Atlantic side of the Canal), there are two main visitor centers you can explore. That being said, there are some fixed set of rules that do not change regardless of which locks you visit. For example, only a Panamanian captain can make the transit through the Canal. So if a ship comes from the United States or China or anywhere with a captain from that country, the Panamanian operator will take over the ship’s control before it enters the Canal’s territory. Once the transit is over, the original captain will regain control.

Esclusas de Miraflores/Miraflores locks

Si tu visita en Panamá es corta (menos de una semana) y no quieres -y no debes- dejar de conocer esta fantástica obra del hombre, tu mejor opción es ir al Centro de Visitantes de Miraflores, que se ubica a tan sólo 20 minutos del centro de la ciudad. En este caso yo fui con mi mamá y las dos quedamos atónitas con todo lo que la experiencia ofrece. El Centro de Visitantes es en sí impresionante. Con un museo, una película en 3D y un observatorio de tres pisos de altura, la visita es realmente educacional y provechosa. Además, es por este set de esclusas por donde más barcos transitan, por lo que es la mejor apuesta si no quieres dejar de ver todo el trabajo y el proceso por el que pasa una nave para atravesar.

If your visit in Panama is brief (less than a week), but you do not want to -and shouldn’t- miss out on this amazing experience, your best choice is to go to the Miraflores Locks, located only 20 minutes away from the city center. This was my first visit to the Canal and, in all seriousness, my mom and me were blown away but what the center has to offer. With a museum, a 3D movie and a three story high observatory, the visit is educational and productive. Plus, this is the busiest set of locks, so it it is definitely your best bet if watching a ship undergo the whole process is your priority.

¡Es fascinante ver los buques de carga pasar ante tus ojos! Y algo que me encanta del centro de Miraflores es que, como el canal cuenta con dos carriles, puedes tener la suerte de ver dos enormes barcos pasar simultáneamente. Un súper tip que les puedo dar es que lleguen o muy temprano o a las 15:00 horas. Porque aunque el Centro está abierto de lunes a domingo de 9:00 a 16:30 horas, si llegan justo en cuanto abren o una hora antes de que cierre, seguro les tocará ver una nave haciendo su trayecto de un océano a otro y habrá menos gente que les obstruya la vista.

Witnessing the huge cargo ships use the canal is fascinating! And something that I really love about Miraflores is that there are two lanes, so if you are lucky enough you can ogle at two boats crossing simultaneously. An amazing tip I can offer you is to arrive as early as the Center opens (9:00 am) or towards its close (3:00 pm). Because even though visiting hours are from 9:00-16:30 hours, getting there just as they open or an hour before closing time will guarantee you a non cluttered VIP view of a cargo transit.

Un dato curioso es que un barco tarde entre ocho y diez horas para cruzar por el Canal de Panamá. ¡Pero no se preocupen! Lo más interesante de este trayecto (el tránsito de la nave por las esclusas) sólo se demora una media hora, un lapso suficientemente breve para disfrutarlo durante su visita. En total, yo creo que todo el recorrido les tomará un par de horas.

Fun fact: a ship takes from eight to ten hours to complete the entire transit through the Panama Canal. But don’t fret! The most interesting part of the passage (what happens when the boat gets to the locks) only takes about 30 minutes; short enough so you can enjoy it during your stop. Count on spending a couple of hours there.

Si por el contrario tienen bastante tiempo en Panamá y quieren hacer un recorrido más turístico del Canal y sus alrededores, les súper recomiendo visitar las nuevas esclusas en el Centro de Agua Clara. Llegar a estas esclusas les tomará poco más de una hora, pero el paisaje de la selva panameña te mantiene atenta y llena de energía. ¡Además, ir hasta allá tiene sus recompensas y ahorita les cuento por qué!

If on the other hand you have time to spare in Panama, visiting the Agua Clara locks and its beautiful green surroundings is definitely your top choice. Driving there will take you a little more than the hour, but the jungle views will keep you excited and cheerful. Plus, getting there has it’s well worth it rewards!

A estas esclusas construidas con el programa de ampliación del Canal fui con Ren. Nos levantamos temprano y salimos de la casa a eso de las 8 de la mañana, porque una visita al Fuerte San Lorenzo también estaba en el itinerario. ¡La verdad es que este es un plan perfecto! ¡Matas dos pájaros de un tiro!

I visited these locks, the main goal of the Canal’s expansion project, with Ren, my husband. We woke up early in the morning and drove out of the house at around 8:00 am. A visit to Fort San Lorenzo (also in the Colon province) was included in our itinerary. And truthfully, if you decide on going to Agua Clara, this is the perfect combo!

Nosotros paramos primero (9:20 horas) en el Centro de Visitantes Agua Clara. En cuanto entramos vimos que un Neopanamax (el barco de carga más grande que cruza por las esclusas) estaba enfilado para atravesar las compuertas. Y precisamente para este tipo de barcos se construyeron las nuevas esclusas, para ahorrar tiempo y dinero a grandes buques que no cabían por las esclusas de Miraflores. A diferencia del barco Panamax (el de máxima capacidad para Miraflores) que puede cargar con 52, 500 toneladas o 5 mil contenedores, ¡el barco Neopanamax puede transportar 120 mil toneladas o 13 mil contenedores! ¡Doblemente increíble!

First we stopped (at around 9:20 am) at the Agua Clara Visitor Center. As soon as we entered we recognized an enormous Neopanamax (the biggest cargo ship that can cross through the Canal) ready to begin its transit through the locks. The NeoPanamax is precisely why they developed the expansion project: to save time and money to bigger cargo ships that did not fit through the Miraflores locks. In contrast with a Panamax ship (this one can cross through the original locks) that can carry up to 52, 500 tons or 5 thousand conainers, the Neopanamax can carry up to 120 thousand tons or 13 thousand containers! Twice as incredible!

Otra diferencia entre las esclusas de Miraflores y las de Agua Clara es el tipo de compuertas. En las originales, las compuertas se abren por el centro haciendo un pico como en V; en las nuevas, la tecnología más avanzada permite que se deslicen y además que se reutilice el agua.

Another difference between the locks is the type of “gate” they use to stop or allow the flow of water. In Miraflores, the doors open up as a V; in Agua Clara, more advanced technology allowed for sliding gates and for pools that recycle the water.

Cabe resaltar que como estas esclusas las utilizan sólo los barcos más grandes, es importantísimo llegar temprano para tener oportunidad de observar toda la acción, ¡no sea que llegues a una hora sin movimiento! En total estuvimos en el Centro de Visitantes un poco más de dos horas.

Please take notice that since usually the bigger ships cross through Agua Clara, it is super important to arrive early to ensure some action during your visit. It would be such a bummer if there were no ships waiting to cross when you were there! We spent about two and a half hours here.

Fuerte San Lorenzo/Fort San Lorenzo

Luego de nuestra visita a Agua Clara tomamos un ferry (con el carro y todo) para cruzar el río y poder llegar a nuestro destino final: el Fuerte San Lorenzo. Nombrado por la Unesco como Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad, este fuerte es uno de lo más antiguos de América. Realmente no hay mucha información sobre la construcción o su uso ahí en el lugar, pero las vistas al mar y la sensación de estar en medio de la selva convierte el destino en uno digno de una visita.

After our Agua Clara visit, we took a ferry (car and all) to cross the river and arrive to our final destination: Fort San Lorenzo. Named by Unesco as part of Humanity’s World Heritage, this fort is one of the oldest Spanish fortresses in America. There isn’t really much information on the Fort’s construction or use on site, but the ocean views and the feeling of being in the middle of the jungle make the place worthy of your visit.

Además, lo más cool es que si emprendes tu regreso a la ciudad pasadas las 15:00 horas, ¡tienes la oportunidad de cruzar por las instalaciones de Agua Clara y pasar justo enfrente de las compuertas nuevas del Canal de Panamá! Así como lo leen, ves las compuertas sólidas y pesadas a metros de distancia, ¡y luego pasas justo por encima de las esclusas! ¡Con esto sientes que de verdad consigues una perspectiva mucho más completa y especial de todo el sistema del Canal de Panamá! ¡Sinceramente fascinante!

The coolest treat is that if you begin your journey back after 3:00 pm, you can ditch the ferry and take the opportunity to cross through the Agua Clara locks facilities! This means you get to admire the solid, heavy, imposing doors just from a couple of meters away of your car seat! And if this wasn’t neat enough, you can then drive over the locks! Your Panama Canal experience ends up being so much richer and captivating than you thought!
